5 Preparation Strategies for First-Time Managers
5 Preparation Strategies for First-Time Managers 5 Preparation Strategies for First-Time ManagersPosted July 26, 2019, by JennyCongratulations Youve just secured yur first manager role. Youre no longer responsible for just your own performance, but for the performance of an entire gruppe as well. Its heady stuff and a little intimidating. Thats good - it helps you grow as a professional and a person. Youll certainly learn as you go, executing new and broader duties. Even before your first day though there are helpful ways you can prepare yourself. Lets take a look at our top five preparation strategies.1. Learn everything you canDevour any learning resources you can get your hands-on - management training materials, articles on leadershipand exercises in effective communication skills. Read through your companys HR policies and employee handbook so that you have a better idea of what to do in any situation. Also, bone up on the latest developments in your area of expertise. If your e managing developers, can you confidently discuss the full scope of programming language or software tools that your team uses? If youre in marketing, are you able to evaluate the range of skill platzdeckchens being utilised by your team, and introduce new ones that can be leveraged for greater success?2. Get to know your teamIf youre being promoted internally then this is easier -- you probably already know a little about the people youll be working with. If youre new to the company, then youll need some help. Ask for the names of the people on your team and look them up on LinkedIn and elsewhere on the internet (its not at all intrusive in fact, your team is likely looking you up as well). Also, research the people managing you. Get familiar with your immediate boss, and all other executives to whom you might indirectly report. Ask HR for a company organisation chart to get a view of all reporting structures. If possible, ask around about some of the key players youll be associati ng with in your new role - find out what kind of personalities they have, how they manage, what type of people succeed or fail under their management, and so on.3. Shift your perspectiveYouve not focused only on you anymore. Your job has now grown from executing a given set of tasks of your own to helping your employees accomplish their tasks. Take the time to step back and shift your perspective. Learn how to focus on the big picture, and to look beyond your needs to that of your team.4. Clean up your actAs a manager, your team will be looking at you as both an authority figure and as an example. You set the mood of the team. If you as a manager are consistently 15 minutes late, then it tells the team its okay for them to be late, too. If you are constantly in a schwimmbad mood or are impatient, then that affects team morale and productivity. To be a good boss, you dont have to be the cool manager (and in fact, you probably shouldnt be), but you do have to set a good example. If y ou want to lead a team of professionals, act professionally yourself.5. Adjust your relationshipsManagers whove been promoted internally have an additional challenge, in that the dynamic of their office friendships has now changed. People with whom youve shared jokes and secrets are now people you have to manage. Friends whove covered for you and vice versa are now employees you have to direct and may have to discipline. Its very important to step back from these relationships in order to function properly as a manager. You cant afford to be seen showing favouritism to old friends you absolutely want to be objective and fair when engaging each member of your team.In closing, becoming a new manager is as challenging as it is exciting with the right preparation you can get a big head start and hit the ground running. So, Whos Lying Now
So, Whos Lying NowSo, Whos Lying Now?So, Whos Lying NowHiring managers and recruiters often accuse job candidates of lying on their resumes and during interviews. When they make these accusations, theyre implying that they dont lie. But after two decades in the recruiting industry from both the company and candidate sides of the desk, I know that the majority of untruths come from the employer side.Recruiters like to use this riddle How do you know when a candidate is lying? Answer Their lips are moving. Recruiters learn quickly that some candidates lie and others tell the truth. Its difficult to tell the difference, so recruiters assume everyone lies unless a candidates actions are aligned with their words.During interviews, candidates are more credible when they provide specific examples of their experience to validate their claims. For example, candidates who state they are creative herausforderung solvers are unlikely to be believed unless they back up their claims with examples of when they used creativity to solve difficult problems. So, a recruiter uses a candidates actions to separate fact from fiction, and truth from deception. But lying (and half-truths) can go the other way, and job candidates can use their own lie detector to determine when hiring managers or HR representatives are lying during the job search process. The fruchtwein frequent lies includeWe found a stronger candidate. We have a few more interviews and will call you in two weeks.Well call you in two days.We are still very interested in you, but not ready to make an offer.Heres what these statements really meanSTATEMENT We found a stronger candidate.MEANING We did not like you as much as we liked someone else.STATEMENT We have a few more interviews and will call you in two weeks.MEANINGWe think we can find someone better, orWere afraid to reject you so well just ignore your future messages until you go away.STATEMENT Well call you in two days.MEANING If they dont call in two days theyre e ither dealing with something unexpected or looking for someone they like more.STATEMENT We are still very interested in you, but not ready to make an offer.MEANINGThey are trying to keep you interested in case they dont find someone else they like more.I spoke similar half-truths when I was a young corporate recruiter. What I said and what I actually meant were different. After several months, I found ways to be more truthful without increasing the legal risk to the company.I began telling candidates the truth when I knew they were not getting hired. Many times, I knew a candidate was not getting the offer even before he or she finished the first round of interviews. In those situations, I told the candidates that we would not extend offers, and I was as specific as possible with my reasons why. For example, I once told a manufacturing engineer he was not getting an offer because he didnt have the level of required expertise in a particular set of technologies. He wasnt surprised, a nd he gave me the name of a colleague who was an expert in that area. We ended up hiring the person he recommended and we stayed in touch with the original candidate, hoping to find a position suitable for his talents. Its remarkable how people react when we treat each other as the peers we really are.Searching for work can be frustrating, yet the most maddening part is being lied to and having your email and voice messages ignored by recruiters, hiring managers, HR, and others.Job seekers (and we are all job seekers at many points in our careers) can create relief from the madness by analyzing a companys actions to separate the truth from the lies. If the company is saying its very interested but not returning your calls, just assume theyre not interested and forget them. How do you insulate yourself from job search lies? How do you know when a company is lying?

Heres one mistake you should avoid making in salary negotiations
Here's one mistake you should avoid making in salary negotiations Here's one mistake you should avoid making in salary negotiations How early in the job process should you ask about pay? Itâs a delicate dance. Too late, and youâve wasted a lot of time for a job that canât support your obligations. Too early, and the question looks presumptuous.Thatâs the thorny patch that, Taylor Byrnes, a woman in Winnipeg, fell into this week. She asked about pay after her first interview, at which point the company representative, offended, cancelled her second interview.Byrnes tweeted about the experience, and it became a viral sensation, capturing the frustration of many job candidates who have trouble with salary negotiations.Hereâs what happened. After an initial phone interview at SkipTheDishes, an online food delivery service that operates in Canada and the U.S., Byrnes had decided to email human resources about benefits and her potential salary It was here where things went awry for Byrnes.Your priorities about pay âare not in sync with those of SkipTheDishesâByrnes emailed SkipTheDishes, âhow much do y ou think Iâll be getting paid an hour? Benefits will also be included, right?âShe didnât get the answer she wanted. In her reply to Byrnes, Victoria Karras, a talent acquisition coordinator for the company, cancelled the next interview, saying, âyour questions reveal that your priorities are not in sync with those of SkipTheDishes.âIn a follow-up email to Byrnes, Karras expanded on what exactly those priorities were: âOur corporate culture may be unique in this way, but it is paramount that staff display intrinsic motivation and are proven self-starters. For these reasons, questions about compensation and benefits at such an early stage is a concern related to organizational fit.âSome on Twitter followed Byrnesâ call to boycott SkipTheDishes, believing that asking about benefits was the sign of a motivated person. To count an interviewer out for asking about pay was a red flag about the companyâs labor practices, they argued.SkipTheDishes apologizes, offers Byrne s that second interviewAfter Byrnesâ experience went viral, SkipTheDishes co-founder Joshua Simair wrote a statement explaining how the company had been wrong.âWe are very disappointed in how it was handled. We do share a compensation package prior to hiring. As soon as we became aware of it on Monday, we reached out to Taylor to apologize for the email and reschedule her interview,â he said, adding that staff would receive âadditional training.âHow SkipTheDishes couldâve handled this betterThere are takeaways for job seekers and employers with this story. For companies and hiring managers: donât treat pay as a frivolous question. Itâs a core part of why people work. SkipTheDishes should have reframed their tone. If Karras really felt that pressed about the salary question, she could have just told Byrnes that this was not an appropriate time to ask about salary and left it at that. There was no need for backhanded insults about an applicant needing to show âintri nsic motivationâ - especially in an email which could be taken as a screenshot and distributed all over the internet, as this one was.Human resourcesâ departments are often the first impression a job seeker has of a company. Give a bad impression and your company may get dragged on Twitter. This question could also have been avoided if SkipTheDishes had included more information about the positionâs salary to signal what kind of applicants they were looking for. A quick line about âpay commensurate with experienceâ can go a long way. The CEO himself acknowledged the importance of pay when he said the company does disclose compensation and benefits packages beforehand. When should a job seeker ask about money in an interviewByrnes could have handled this better too. First off, there are better ways of conducting salary negotiations than by email. Salary talks are a crucial part of the discussion for a new job, and talking in person gives candidates the ability to judge the facial expressions and tone of the executive on the other side of the negotiation. For Byrnesâ next SkipTheDishes interview, some career coaches advised waiting until the job offer is secured to ask about money.âYou donât want to be negotiating salary until theyâre at their maximum love- their maximum enthusiasm for you,â Sarah Stamboulie, a former human resources manager for Morgan Stanley and Nortel Networks said. As a job seeker, you have the most leverage when an employer tells you youâre their first choice. Thatâs the moment when you press that advantage and ask for the salary you want. There will be a back-and-forth after that, but the goodwill from previous interviews will bolster your case.Nick Corcodilos, a Silicon Valley headhunter, said that above all, if youâre asking about salary, do your research about whatâs an appropriate salary range. It may have helped Byrnes if she had not just asked about salary and benefits, but also justified what added value she could bring to the job - which is, again, a task better left off email.

Giving Robots a Human Touch
Giving Robots a Human Touch Giving Robots a Human Touch Giving Robots a Human Touch While her robot, Mimus, isnt a pet, Madeline Gannon programmed the industrial robot to behave like a docile creature. Its all in the name of sparking a conversation about the way robots and humans interact. For a recent art installation, Gannon trained a common industrial robot, which she named Mimus, to move spontaneously while roaming around its enclosure. Mimus appeared at the Design Museum in London through April as part of the exhibit Fear and Love: Reactions to a Complex World. Gannon is principal researcher at the Carnegie Mellon Atonaton Studio, which develops ways for humans to better communicate with machines. Mimus is the name of the bird genus that contains mockingbirds. Mimus the robot is an ABB IRB 6700 industrial species of the type usually used on automotive assembly lines to perform tasks like spot welding and material handling. The robot can hold up to 441 pounds, has a reach radius of 8.5 feet, and moves at a top speed of about 15 miles per hour. In other words she (as Gannon calls the robot) is not a machine to be trifled with. Which is exactly the point, Gannon says. There is the potential for empathy and companionship between humans and machines. Image: Atonaton As intelligent, autonomous robots become a more ubiquitous part of the built environment, its critical we design more effective ways of interacting and communicating with them, she says. The newer, smarter, autonomous robots like drones, trucks, or cars share many attributes with industrial robots: theyre large, fast, and potentially dangerous, and they dont communicate well with their human counterparts, Gannon adds. But deciding how these robots mediate our lives should not be the sole discretion of tech companies or cloistered robotics labs, she says. She programmed Mimus with a simple, agent-based behavior that generates her movement and trajectory. As the programmer, I set up the boundaries of where she can and cannot go. So, for example, she cant run onto the floor or leave her enclosure, but she decides how to move to go visit a person, Gannon says. Mimus did act toward her admirers like a relatively tame animal kept at bay by a gate at the zoo. Mimus depicts one way people could empathize with a machine and, in that way, better live harmoniously and safely with autonomous robots: via body language, Gannon says. In developing Mimus, we found a way to use the robots body language as a way to cultivate empathy between museum-goers and a piece of industrial machinery, she says. Body language is a primitive yet fluid means of communication that can broadcast an innate understanding of the behaviors, kinematics, and limitations of an unfamiliar machine. Mimus also shows the untapped potential industrial robots have for working with humans. After all, Ganon adds, industrial robots arent going anywhere. Theyve remained relatively unchanged for the past 50 years. When something responds to us with lifelike movements, even when it is clearly an inanimate object, we, as humans, cannot help but project our emotions onto it, Gannon says. But body language isnt the sole way to bridge the human-robot divide, she adds. We need many more diverse and imaginative solutions for the various ways these intelligent machines will immerse themselves in our homes, offices, and cities, Gannon says. In response to one commonly cited social fear: robots taking work from humans, Gannon says she believes in a more optimistic future, where robots expand humanity instead of replacing it. With Mimus, rather than view robots as a human adversary, we demonstrate a future where autonomous machines, like Mimus, might be companions who co-exist with us on this planet, she adds. Jean Thilmany is an independent writer. For Further Discussion When something responds to us with lifelike movements, even when it is clearly an inanimate object, we, as humans, cannot help but project our emotions onto it. Catering Services Agreement FAQ - United States
Catering Services Agreement FAQ - United States Catering Services Agreement FAQ - United States Catering Agreement BasicsWhy isn't an oral Catering Agreement sufficient? The problem with oral agreements is that they are difficult to prove. If a dispute arose, a court would have to hear evidence and decide whose version of the truth to accept. If there is a written agreement, courts will generally be obligated to uphold its terms even if they don't agree with them. What is addressed in a Catering Agreement?Catering Agreements typically address the following: the parties to the agreement; the catering service being offered; the term of agreement; and the compensation that will be provided to the Caterer. In addition, Catering Agreements may also provide specifics on: how confidential information is to be treated upon the Caterer's termination; whether there are deadlines for changing menu items or whether confirmation of the number of guests is required; and how disputes between the Customer and Caterer will be handled. Who are the parties to the Catering Agreement? The parties to the Catering agreement are the Customer and the Caterer. The Customer is the individual or business seeking the Catering while the Caterer is the individual or corporation providing the Catering. What is the difference between an Employment Contract and a Catering Agreement?A Catering Agreement is a type of Service Agreement.Catering Agreements are used to hire Caterers or independent contractors, not employees. A Catering Agreement is limited to a specific project or time period. Employment Contracts are used to hire employees. What is the difference between an employee and independent contractor?Independent contractors are individuals who provide services for a fee but are not considered to be employees because they work for themselves and do not have an employer. Examples of independent contractors include those who operate their own practice or trade in fields such as plumbing, carpentry or graphic design or in more specialized technical settings such as accounting, engineering or computer programming. The law treats employees and independent contractors differently, but it is not always easy to establish which category an individual falls into. In cases of dispute, courts will determine the appropriate category by examining a number of factors. Some factors will be considered more important than others. Examples of relevant factors are: who is providing the tools for the job; the level of skill required for the job; who controls the work and the work product; whether the hired party must provide oral/written progress reports; whether the job is performed on the business premises; the duration of the relationship between the parties; the ability to delegate or sub-contract the job of the hired party; whether the hired party has discretion over how long and when they work; whether any insurance or benefits are provided to the hired party; whether the hired party's expenses are reimbursed; whether the hired party can realize a profit or loss; whether the work is part of the regular business of the hiring party; whether the parties have a written agreement defining the status of the hired party; the method of payment; and the way the hired party is treated by taxing authorities. Is this a Master Service Agreement? No. If you need a Master Service Agreement as well as subordinate agreements, you should consult a lawyer qualified in your jurisdiction. Term of AgreementWhat is the end date of the agreement? The end date is the date when the Catering under the agreement is no longer provided or needed. What does notice mean?Notice refers to the amount of time that is provided by one party to another when they wish to end their obligations under the agreement prior to the agreed end date. The purpose of notice is to allow the Caterer to find other employment or the Customer to find a replacement Caterer. In most jurisdictions, the law does not offer independent contractors the same minimum notice protection that is typically offered to employees (unless the notice is expressly provided in the agreement). However, courts may award notice (or pay in lieu of notice) to an independent contractor if he/she can show that he/she was economically dependent on the Customer. In those circumstances, courts may impose a reasonable notice period or damages. CompensationHow should the Caterer be paid? The Caterer can be paid or compensated in many different ways. If the Caterer will be paid a certain amount (rate) for each time period, use Hourly, Weekly, Monthly or Yearly as appropriate. If the Caterer is to be paid a certain fixed amount for the complete performance under the agreement, use Fixed Amount. If the Compensation is determined by the number or type of menu items, number of guests, per plate, number of servers required for the event, or if the Compensation is several payments or involves the trade of services or goods, use Other. If you have a certain rate for the services performed together with additional remuneration, use this question for the basic rate and use the Additional Compensation question to describe the additional compensation. Which currency should I select?Select the form of currency for all monetary amounts (compensation, expenses, etc.) referred to in this agreement. What is additional compensation?Additional compensation refers to any compensation the Caterer will be paid in addition to the basic compensation specified under the question How will the Caterer be paid?. What items should be provided to the Caterer? If the Customer wishes to provide any services, tools, office space, materials, etc. to the Caterer to perform the services, then the Customer should select Yes to the question Will the Customer be providing anything to the Caterer? and then describe what he/she is providing. What does Penalties for late payment? mean? This question refers to whether the Customer will be penalized for failing to pay the Caterer on time. Select Do not specify to not mention whether there will be penalties for late payment. Select No if the Agreement will expressly state that there are no penalties for late payment. Select Yes to be able to expressly state what the penalties will be for late payment. What does Penalties imposed for non-performance of the services in a timely manner? mean? This question refers to whether the Caterer will be penalized for failing to perform the services on time. Select Do not specify to not mention whether there will be such penalties. Select No if the Agreement will expressly state that there are no such penalties. Select Yes to be able to expressly state what the penalties will be for failing to perform the services on time. What is a 1099 form? For income tax purposes, Form W-2 is used to report ordinary employee wages, salary and tips, however, self-employment earnings must also be reported. Form 1099 is used to report self-employed, service related income. Usually the payer will provide a completed Form 1099 to the payment recipient as well as to the IRS. Various kinds of income other than wages and salaries are reported using Form 1099 but the most common use of the Form 1099 is for reporting earnings as an independent contractor. Restrictive CovenantsWhat is a confidentiality clause? The confidentiality clause prevents the Caterer from using or disclosing the Customer's confidential business information to a third party. Dispute ResolutionWhat do mediation and arbitration mean?Mediation is a process where an impartial 3rd party or mediator facilitates the negotiation of a settlement between parties to a dispute. Arbitration is a process whereby parties to a dispute mutually agree to an impartial referee who hears and makes a binding decision. Both processes are superior to the court process when there is a long term relationship involved and the survival of the business relationship is desirable. These processes can be less expensive, more expedient, and more efficient than the court process. MiscellaneousWhat is contained in the standard clauses? Our standard clauses are those clauses which are most often included when creating a Catering Agreement. Some of the clauses deal with: assignment; the capacity of the independent contractor; modification of the agreement; time being of the essence; and severability of invalid or unenforceable clauses. If you don't want all these clauses in your agreement, select 'No' and you can pick and choose which clauses to include. What is meant by Corporation/Organization under the Type of Customer and Type of Service Provider fields?A Corporation is a duly registered corporate entity. An organization can be any other type of business entity such as a sole proprietorship, partnership, or a Limited Liability Company. If you are entering the agreement as the representative of a business then you would select the Corporation/Organization option. If you are acting strictly for yourself then select the Individual option. What does the Assignment clause do?The Assignment clause prevents the Caterer from transferring their rights or responsibilities to another party without the Customer's consent. What does the Capacity/Independent Contractor clause do?The Capacity/Independent contractor clause reiterates that the Caterer is hired as an independent contractor or consultant and not as an employee of the Customer. Note that disguising an employment relationship as an independent contractor in order to avoid having to pay employee benefits like holiday pay, pension, worker's compensation and income tax is illegal. A court may find that a work relationship is an employee/employer relationship if the person hired is closely supervised and directed by the hirer. An independent contractor usually provides a skilled service, is paid for a specific result, controls how the services are provided, is free to refuse additional work, and usually bears the cost of repairing faulty work. A court would take all these factors into consideration when deciding if a particular work relationship was a sham contracting arrangement. What does the Modification of Agreement clause do?The Modification of Agreement clause states that any changes to the agreement must be made by written consent of all the parties to the agreement. What does the Time of the Essence clause do?This clause provides that all dates and time limits are strictly enforced. What does the Entire Agreement clause do?The Entire Agreement clause confirms that there are no other provisions or terms outside of this agreement. What does the Severability clause do?The Severability clause declares that if the courts find that a particular clause of the agreement is invalid or unenforceable, the validity of the remaining provisions of the agreement will not be affected. What does the Return of Property clause do?The Return of Property clause states that the Caterer will return all property belonging to the Customer upon termination of the Agreement. What does the Limitation of Liability clause do?This clause allows the parties to completely absolve the Caterer in the event that any losses, damages or any other liabilities arise out of the services provided. Where this clause is selected, the contract cannot also have an indemnification clause. What does the Indemnification clause do?An Indemnification clause is where the Caterer agrees to pay back the Customer for claims made against the Customer by any third party for any damage or loss arising out of the provision of the services. Where this clause is selected, a limitation of liability clause cannot be selected. What does the Legal Expenses clause do?The Legal Expenses clause reiterates that legal costs and fees associated with any legal action will be awarded to the successful party. What does the Notice clause do?The Notice clause indicates how all notices under this agreement will be given. What does the Enurement clause do?The Enurement clause declares that any rights and responsibilities of the parties will pass on to their successors. What does the Titles/Headings clause do?The Titles/Headings clause states that the titles/headings of each section are inserted for clarification only and are not for purposes of interpretation. What does the Gender clause do?The Gender clause declares that words in the singular or masculine sense also encompass words in the plural and feminine sense, respectively. What does the Waiver clause do?The Waiver clause states that if one party waives its rights to enforce a breach by another party, this failure to enforce its rights will not be held as a waiver of any subsequent breaches. What does the Ownership of Materials clause do?The Ownership of Materials clause declares that materials developed in the course of the services will be the exclusive property of the Customer. The clause further holds that the Caterer will not be held responsible for damages resulting from the use of the mentioned materials for work other than services contracted for in the agreement.

What your LinkedIn profile says about you and how to improve it
What your LinkedIn profile says about you and how to improve it What your LinkedIn profile says about you and how to improve it Everything in the job search process is now very much online-focused for job candidates; from how you apply to jobs (through online application platforms) to where you find job opportunities (job boards like Monster, Indeed, LinkedIn, etc.) to where you do research companies. On the flip side for companies, how they conduct hiring and vetting of candidates is very online focused too. And aside from the resume that you send when youâre applying, your LinkedIn profile is another hugely important part of your presentation as a candidate.First, think about the ways employers rely on LinkedIn as for recruiting tool. They use it to: Find candidates like you. Recruiters utilize LinkedIn as a powerful recruitment tool, locating candidates who meet certain criteria by searching for keywords, locations, education backgrounds, current employers, and current title. Determine whether youâre qualified. When set up appropriately, your LinkedIn profile closely resembles a resume, detailing your work history, professional achievements, educational background, professional references, licenses, and certifications. Determine whether youâre a cultural fit. The things you share on social media can help a recruiter learn more about your personal values and determine whether theyâre a good match for the organizationâs mission, vision, and values. So given that LinkedIn is playing a bigger and bigger role in the job search these days, hereâs what you should know about what your LinkedIn says about you:What your profile says about youYour profile is perceived to be a direct reflection of you. Because potential employers are considering your profile to be a direct reflection of your work history, values, and work ethic, itâs important to put time and effort into building your profile and even your activity (shares and likes, for example).Looking for an inspiring way to start your day? Sign up for Morning Motivation!Itâs our friendly Facebook robot that will send you a quick note every weekday morning to help you start strong. Sign up here by clicking Get Started!A barren profileAn empty profile may unintentionally tell an employer that you arenât qualified or arenât dedicated enough to the search to update your information. A robust LinkedIn profile that includes your professional background, educational achievements, rewards, certifications, volunteer commitments, areas of professional interest, references, and affiliations may tell a potential employer that you are thorough and qualified. No photoIf thereâs no picture on your profile, employers might wonder if youâre even a real person and may pass you by (remember, they pay for every message they send to potential candidates). Likewise, if you arenât actively sharing scholarly articles and other information related to your field, they may think youâre inactive and pass you by (or that you arenât interested in continuous improvement and learning).Political or overly personal sharesSharing potentially offensive material or strong political views might tell an employer that you struggle to separate your personal views from your professional obligations or that youâre misaligned with the companyâs core values.A private profileA private profile â" that doesnât allow people you donât know to see your information, connect with you, or contact you â" says that you arenât interested in learning about new opportunities.Too many irrelevant goals and interestsYour profile can also tell a story about your career goals and interests. If you have a degree in biology, for example, but your profile is focused on family medicine and includes your goals of becoming a family medicine practitioner, a research company may come to the conclusion that you donât desire to work as a biologist and pass on contacting you.How to maximize your profileMaximizing your LinkedIn profile requires an intentional effort. There are several things you can do with LinkedIn to stand out to potential employers and illustrate your fit for their position and organization: Adjust your settings to ensure your profile is public and others can reach out to you with opportunities. Keep your profile updated in real times, ensuring that your educational background, location, and other credentials are listed. Add keyword tags for your areas of expertise. If you have a degree in business administration, for example, you may use tags like business strategy, human resources management, productivity, strategic planning, financial management, office management, and operations. This ensures that whether an employer is seeking an office manager or an operations manager, they see your profile. Include your education background and work history in chronological order to closely resemble your resume. Rather than listing duties in previous employment, list your achievements in each position (i.e. reduced turnover by 12% in 12 months; improved productivity by 18% over a single quarter; secured $4m in sales per quarter on average). Be purposeful about content you post and share; choose content that demonstrates interest in your field of choice, thought leadership (if applicable) and desire for professional growth and development. How Chunking Improves Work Efficiency and Productivity
How Chunking Improves Work Efficiency and Productivity How Chunking Improves Work Efficiency and Productivity As managers, we spend too much of our day trying to fit more work into less time. A common response for overworked professionals at all levels is to attempt to multitask by performing multiple activities at the same time. The problem is that multitasking doesnt work. Why Multitasking Isnt the Most Effective Approach For example, imagine that as you brush your teeth in the morning, you start thinking about the agenda for a big meeting later in the day. It doesnt take much of your brains processing power to brush your teeth, and you might be able to concentrate on the agenda while mechanically handling your morning teeth cleaning task. But what about two tasks that require more of your brains capacity? You might be talking on the phone while youre preparing breakfast. You may get both tasks done correctly, but the opportunity for mistakes due to lapses in attention is large. Chunking as an Alternative to Multitasking Chunking describes how human memory utilization works. It is important to remember this concept as we look at completing several tasks simultaneously. We are, in fact, switching between them rather than doing them at the same time (although, in the case of brushing your teeth, it may seem like they are simultaneous). Imagine you are on the phone when someone walks into your office. They ask for your advice or a quick decision on an issue. You stop listening to the person on the phone briefly, scan the note in front of you, scribble a response, and go back to the phone call. You did not do the two activities (phone call and in-person conversation) at the same time. You actually did three tasks in sequence: started the phone call, had the in-person conversation, and then resumed the phone call. Just as in the breakfast example above, you could have gotten both of them done better, and in less total time, if you had done them one after the other instead of at the same time. The reason is that as you begin each task, you have to focus on it and get started. The Ineffective Start-Up Time of Multitasking When you started the phone call, you had to think about it, find the phone number, and make the call. When you were interrupted, you had to figure out what the person wanted from you to be able to give them a decision. Finally, when you resumed the phone call, you had to remember where you left off. You might even have had to say, Oops, sorry, someone walked in. What were you saying? The more starts and stops you make during the day, the more of these time-consuming start-up moments you have. These moments are non-productive time. If you have a daily report to prepare, the start-up moment is probably pretty short compared to that for the report you only do quarterly. Still, if you are preparing that report and you get interrupted, you have almost the same length of time for start-up each time. Lets say, for example, you can write a report in 30 minutes without any interruptions. However, it can take several hours if unplanned tasks and interruptions pop up throughout the day. This substantial delay often doesnt come so much from the actual interruptions as the time it takes to restart the report over and over again. Why You Should Try Chunking OK, sometimes you have to multitask. Your job may be operational, so what is better than multitasking? Chunking is better for productivity. Chunking is the concept of breaking up your day into larger chunks instead of reacting to constant interruptions. The more chunks of time you can devote to specific tasks, the fewer start-up moments you will have, and your efficiency improves commensurately. Since you wont be spending as much time in start-up moments, you will have more time, and you will get more done. As a bonus, since you will be able to focus on the single task at hand, you will do it better. As a sidebar, project managers long ago figured out the power of this technique and created their own version of chunking via the work breakdown structure process. How to Get Started With Chunking at Work So, how can you start chunking? Start small until you get the feel of it. Pick a single task, perhaps your weekly report.Set aside the 30 minutes you know it will take.Close your door or put up a sign that reads Genius at work or something like that and then concentrates on the report and nothing but the report.Ignore the phone.Dont check email.Just write the report. Attempt the same with phone calls, employee meetings, and other regular activities. Focus, chunk your days out, and after a few weeks of practice, you will feel and be more efficient. The Bottom Line Dont waste so much of your time trying to multitask. Instead, make yourself more efficient and more productive by chunking. While the term is awkward, the concept is effective. Overnight Resume Success
Overnight Resume Success Overnight Resume Success HR executive receives resume rewrite by a professional resume writer and sees success one day later. After months of job searching, it can be easy to lose perspective about how much difference a small change can make. After hundreds of unreturned e-mails, phone calls that get no response and the understanding that success doesnât happen overnight, job seekers like Natalie, a human resources executive in northern Virginia, donât expect drastic results from a little change like improving their resume. Those expectations shrink even more when, like Natalie, youâve already tried it twice before.âI had paid twice to have my resume done, and they just didnât do a good job,â said Natalie, who asked that her last name not be used. âOver two years, I sent out more than 400 resumes and couldnât find a full-time job. I fell deeper and deeper into debt and was in foreclosure. I was six months behind in my payments; it was a really precarious situation.âIt was demoralizing for the woman, who worked her way to an associateâs, then a bachelorâs degree and added technical and functional certifications during the 11 years she spent at IBM, where she rose from an executive assistant position to human-resources roles and held technical positions along the way.âI know all the work Iâve done, but I was not able to show it on my resume, so that information was not being communicated to recruiters,â she said. âWhat was hindering me was not my lack of skills â" it was how it was presented on the resume that failed.âThe two biggest reasons Natalieâs resume got no attention: It didnât include the kinds of keywords and phrases human-resources software applications look for when they scan resumes and didnât give human readers a clear, instantly recognizable set of skills and value for her. Thatâs the expert opinion of Tina Brasher, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders and wrote Natalieâs most recent resume.âYou have to de termine what the person wants to do next, and that has to be clear from the resume,â Brasher said. âWhat occupation and what level and what would make you better at it than everyone else whose resumes come in.âTo even be considered you have to have the right skills. She had things like âstrong communicator, problem-solving skills, listening skills.â Thatâs all a lot of hooey,â Brasher said. âHiring managers are interested in accomplishments. Natalie was looking for a position as an HR generalist, so if she didnât have words like ârecruiting, benefits and compensation, regulatory complianceâ in the list, her resume would never see the light of day. And she didnât.âNatalie began her career at IBM as an executive assistant, but was soon promoted to asset manager where she managed the inventory of laptops, desktops and devices for more than 4,000 employees and ultimately became resource manager where she managed the complex personnel elements and regulatory iss ues of projects for defense contractors and federal agencies. âI knew thatâs what I wanted to do for the rest of my career,â Natalie said of that job.She has also worked part-time as a 911 emergency services operator and customer service representative in a call center while taking courses toward an MBA.A career misstep; a new searchIn 2006, Natalie made what she now calls âa mistakeâ: She left IBM to start her own identity-theft-prevention consultancy. There, she used her training as a Certified Identity Theft Risk Management Specialist (CITRMS) to counsel small businesses in northern Virginia on IT security. She found few customers, and the business failed in 2008. âEverything just fell into a black hole,â she said. âMy 401K, savings, pension, everything. I put everything into building my business and got no return on my investment.âNatalie was back looking for full-time employment for the first time in two years, and she found trouble explaining her experience in a resume. What she saw as working her way up in the business world, the business world saw as âa convoluted career path,â Brasher said.Natalie tried twice before to have her resume written by experts, the second time going to a company that specialized in resumes designed for companies that work closely with government agencies.âImagine paying more than a thousand dollars to two companies to do your resume and then you send it in for a free critique [at Ladders] and it comes back with five pages of whatâs wrong with it?â she said. âImagine investing $695 for a new one? No one looking for a job thinks they can afford to do that. But if it will get you a job in one t o two days? Thatâs priceless. It would pay for itself.âBrasher formatted and rewrote the resume to focus on Natalieâs laundry list of skills and qualifications: project management, lifecycle recruitment strategy and support, HR regulations, federal employment standards, IT security, federal, state and local contract bidding, law-enforcement, asset management, administration, and project-resource management. She introduced the document with a summary of what Natalie brought to the table and included a list of keywords that described her skills in ways search engines and HR software applications could identify. Then she listed Natalieâs roles at IBM and her part-time jobs in decreasing order of importance.âShe had all these jobs, so it looks at first glance like sheâs a job-hopper, Brasher said. âBut sheâs not. She got promoted frequently at IBM. So we had to make that clear.âBut would it pay for itself?Natalie found out one day after Brasher handed her the final dra ft. Natalie attended a job fair in Northern Virginia sponsored by local defense contractors. After standing in line with all the other hopefuls, Natalie noticed one recruiterâs table open. Applicants would sit for a minute and talk, then just walk away.âI walked over and gave him my resume, and he just beamed; he said my qualifications and my clearances fit what they were looking for and he didnât think he was going to find anyone,â Natalie said. âHe talked to me and called right back to another manager, and it all happened just that quick.âThe defense contractor, who Natalie asked not be named because sheâs still going through the required verification process, offered her a position as an executive administrative assistant. The job is for a division of the defense contractor that maintains high-security data centers for the Department of Homeland Securityâs U.S. Customs and Border Protection to verify the identity and contents of planes, trains and ships entering t he U.S.The job fits with Natalieâs administrative, IT, law enforcement and government experience and gives her the chance to do HR work while she completes her MBA and reopens negotiations on her foreclosure.Such overnight success is rare and a first for Brasher. No other client has ever reported such a fast response. Not that they would call the resume writer, she laughed. âTheyâre usually busy calling friends and family and being relieved that they got it. The resume writerâs usually the last one they think of to call.â
